Classes of Author

There are three classes of author in prints: General, Intermediate and Advanced. There are two classes of author in slides and projected digital images (PDI): General and Advanced.

New members should inform the competition secretaries of any RPS or PAGB awards or successes in external competitions and exhibitions to ensure that they start in an appropriate class. In the absence of such evidence they will normally begin in the General class. Promotion will be agreed annually by the committee on the recommendation of the appropriate competition secretary. Classes for prints and slides are considered separately but authors who are already in the Advanced class for prints or slides will normally be allocated to the Advanced class for PDI.

General Competition Rules

There are separate competitions for slides, prints and PDI.

Images may be of any subject but will be judged as pictorial in nature. They may be naturalistic, creative or experimental and be digitally manipulated in any manner. Images must have significant photographic content ie from a traditional photographic process, digital camera or scanner. Images created solely in a computer are not acceptable.

An image may only be submitted in one medium (print, slide or PDI) in one season.

Judges are asked to comment on each image and mark it out of 20. Each class is judged separately. An image which has earned 13 or more marks in a competition may not be re-entered, except in a Final.

Copyright must be vested in the author but a print or slide may be professionally processed.

Print-Specific Rules

There are six Print Competitions in each of which authors may submit a maximum of two prints. The highest score per competition and the highest five scores out of the six competitions will count for the seasonal league table.

There is also a Print Final in which each author may submit two prints that have been in a print competition during the season. The judge will pick the best print from each class and the Print of the Year.

On the night of a competition, prints will be accepted until 7.50pm.

Print Details:
Prints must be on a stiff mount and not less than 224cm2 and of a maximum size of 40x50cm. The print title and author's name must be written on the back and if the orientation is questionable "Top" should also be written on the back.

On the night of a competition, slides will be accepted until 7.50pm
Slide Mounting Example

Slide Details:
Slides must be in 5x5cm slide mounts and may be masked in any manner.
